Gifted and talented (G&T) within the physical education (PE) and sport can be considered by aspiring schools in the following ways:
- applying the G&T ethos as an inclusive ethos for the whole school
- G&T provision and support for young people in PE and sport is equally about meeting the achievement and performance needs of 'identified' pupils already experiencing success within and outside school, as well as meeting the aspirational needs of those pupils with potential in PE and sport within it
- Your school's core business must embrace G&T provision and support, as both relate to good provision within curriculum teaching and learning in PE and sport. As such, schools must always strive to raise standards through proper techniques such as differentiation, bench-marking of standards, good assessment, monitoring and review, etc.
- G&T provision in PE and sport is also about building the necessary links outside the curriculum to further enrich, extend and accelerate learning and achievement for those that need these sorts of additional resources
- G&T support is crucial to talented individuals in PE and sport, and involves establishing a system to support both identified G&T pupils and those with potential, through management of priorities and objectives, and by interfacing with teachers, schools, coaches, clubs and parents.
Schools should attempt to reaffirm their current strengths within G&T curriculum provision for teaching and learning in PE and sport for enrichment, extension, accelerated learning and raising attainment and achievement.
Therefore your focus should consolidate and build upon external partnerships and links to provide for more extension opportunities to help existing talented young sports pupils make further significant progress.
Schools should highlight how a support programme like Junior Athlete Education (JAE) can be implemented to help with lifestyle management and planning, to be supplemented with mentoring of identified young athletes.
In addition, schools are encouraged to use the PE Quality Standards for Talent Development to benchmark their approach and provision for G&T in PE (and whole school). Please see the section on PE Quality Standards for Talent Development in Section 4.3.x
Key actions for schools wishing to begin work immediately to address G&T in PE and sport provision should include:
- establishing a whole school G&T policy (click here for a template example of a whole school policy you can use to begin to contruct a whole school policy for G&T)
- establishing a G&T PE subject policy (click here for a template example of a PE G&T policy you can use to construct a G&T policy for PE)
- drawing up a register of existing talented young sports people in PE and sport; ideally this register should contain those who have the potential to attain and achieve too Click here to visit the national curriculum website for more information
- examine, reflect and review PE and sport provision within curriculum teaching and learning to improve standards (use the guidance given in the PE Quality Standards for Talent Development)
- examine, reflect and review PE and sport provision within existing and potential partnership links with community agencies to improve access for talented young sports people.
