Glasgow grabs Games again

9th November 2007

Lets celebrate! The legacy of the UK School Games proved its worth for Glasgow as today, the city won the race to stage one of the biggest events in sport: the Commonwealth Games. Celebrations are taking place over Glasgow and Scotland with hundreds gathering in the city’s George Square.

This is the third time a Scottish city has been chosen to host the games. The decision was announced in Sri Lanka, with Glasgow winning by 47 votes to 24. Glasgow had been competing against Nigerian capital Abuja for the right to host the 2014 Games.

It has been estimated that the games will cost the city £288m with most of the funding coming from the Scottish Government.

The Youth Sport Trust sends its warmest congratulations to Glasgow. Well done!
