Peter BarwellAs part of the build up to the UK School Games, the Youth Sport Trust will be profiling a competitor from each sport. To kick off the series, we introduce you to 18-year old, Fencer Peter Barwell from Kent.

Peter is one of 96 fencing athletes who have been announced to compete at the 2009 UK School Games. He will fence against the UK’s teenage elite in the Men’s Foil event, being held at the University of Wales in Cardiff.

Darren Campbell, UK School Games Ambassador said:

“I congratulate Peter and everyone who made the fencing squads, for their determination in achieving a place at the UK School Games. This will no doubt be the most important performance of their sporting careers so far…I’ll be there watching Peter and his fellow athletes be the best that they can be,” he said.

Peter trains four times a week in London and Tonbridge to keep his fencing skills at a nationally competitive level. He also cycles, runs and swims in order to heighten his fitness. This is the third year that he’s competed in the UK School Games. Last year he won a silver medal.

Peter said:

“I feel excited to be able to compete in the UK School Games for a third time, and not having won gold before has made me more determined to win it this time,” he said.

The UK School Games takes place from 3 to 6 September 2009.
