Under 12’s Multi-Sport Competition

13 March 2008

Camborne Science and Community CollegeOver 150 school children from across the Penryn School Sport Partnership gathered at Carn Brea Leisure Centre this week for an Under 12’s Multi-Sport Competition.

Athletes from Richard Lander, Mullion, Helston, Penryn, Falmouth, Camborne, Redruth and Pool competed in Sports Hall Athletics. The atmosphere was electric as schools cheered on their team mates who competed in a range of disciplines including sprints, relays, speed bounce, seated ball throw, standing long jump and triple jump.

On the other side of the Sport Hall pom-pom’s were being shook with vigor as the schools competed in a cheerleading and street dance competition. Gemma Wilson, Cornwall’s Senior Competition Manager said:

“This is the first time we have held a cheerleading competition. The lead in to the event has been really impressive. Young leaders from each secondary school have run a cheerleading club for the Year 7 pupils. Camborne Science & Community College have recorded the largest number of girls in an after-school club this year!”

The girls then practiced each week and bought a slick routine to the competition. Each routine was judged on performance, musical interpretation and choreography. Kate Loram, Health & Fitness Coach who trained the leaders at a cheerleading workshop said:

“The girls have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, some of the leaders have received gifts and thank-you cards from the younger girls. It is a great way of establishing good relationships between the different year groups.”

Other pupils enjoyed a golf coaching session and competition in the Sports Hall, which was run by golf professionals from Tehidy Golf Club. The whole atmosphere of the event was fantastic and the young leaders from our secondary schools did an amazing job of marshaling, running stations, judging and supporting the Year 7 pupils.
