Bright future for young sprinter
Monday, 1 September 2008
UK School Games gold medallist Deji Tobias reckons he has the potential to catch triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt after he won gold in the 100m final.
The 16-year-old sprinter is gunning for the new Olympic Champion after clinching top spot on the podium in 10.68 seconds.
Although he has almost a second to make up on Bolt’s world record of 9.68 seconds, Tobias has his sights set on catching the Jamaican and taking his title.
“I think what Bolt did in Beijing was amazing…One day I want to break his record but right now it feels fantastic to be a gold medallist at the UK School Games.”
Also in the athletics at this year’s UKSG, Benytta Doman stole the show in the girls 800m with a time of 2:09.95 – just a year after finishing last in the same event.
She said, “Winning this medal means so much to me and I wanted to win it so bad and now that I have I am so overjoyed to have won.”
And finally Brea Leung smashed her discus record from last year’s competition by five metres with a throw of 39.05 metres to claim the gold and beat her PB by a metre and a half.
