Volleyball Wales launches
Wednesday, 27 May 2009
After two years of intense development work, the Youth Sport Trust is pleased to announce that Volleyball Wales has launched.
Back in 2007 as a consequence of Volleyball being included in the UK School Games, Volleyball England begun overseeing school age competitions across the UK. The non-existence of any form of Welsh National Governing Body was pushed to the forefront as a major gap. This led to a ‘roadshow’ being undertaken around Wales to pull together enough volunteers to kick start a junior volleyball engagement programme (Choose Volleyball) to try and get more people playing the sport. It was hoped that in time this would lead to athletes being of a suitable standard for a Welsh inclusion in the UK School Games therefore completing the event and consequently having all four UK nations competing.
In South and West Wales two groups of volunteers led on the developments, not only with the juniors on the court but off the court with background work to get the infrastructure in place to support two training Welsh junior teams. Strong links were made with the Sports Council for Wales and the other already established Governing Bodies to provide a support network for the volunteers as they strived to produce not only a number of schools playing Volleyball regularly and two squads training and competing but a new National Governing Body.
In just over 12 months Volleyball Wales had enough volunteers to submit an application to the Welsh Sports Council to become a constituted Governing Body. Congratulations and good luck to all that were voted onto the newly formed committee.
